Peter Rives has been at Foremost since 2003 and entered into the futures industry in 1982. He has worked closely with clients in various trading investments and sees himself as here to serve. Peter says, “Clients share with me what they want to do and together we put together a plan. Years in the business have convinced me, in my opinion, that the successful investor generally has a couple things in common:
- They select investments that control risk
- They do not get emotionally attached to their investments
- They rebalance and adjust as necessary.
I realize that these are easier said than done and they are not a guarantee of success but with discipline and the occasional reminder they are good investment tools.”
As a Senior Broker Peter understands that customers and brokers need to work well together. Personality, experience, and service are important. Peter assists his clients in choosing the best investment vehicles based on their individual needs and risk tolerances. Peter runs the Automated Order Desk and operates various order entry platforms for Trade Station, Gain Trader 3.5, RJO’s WebOE, ADM’s Oak Web, and Oak Desktop to name a few. Peter works around his client’s busy schedules – Making sure he is available when they request it.
Of note, Peter began his commodities career in 1982 as a runner at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He steadily moved up the ranks working as a phone clerk, trading desk manager, currency director and floor broker with a client list that included national banks and two of the top five hedge funds. He left the trading floor in October 2000.
Peter learned the technical side of trading during his tenure in the research department of Dean Witter. This technical training was paramount in helping his clients identify key areas of support and resistance in the markets that they’re trading.
In an effort to further assist clients in achieving their investment goals, Peter started following various Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs). He saw that his clients liked the idea of not having to pay an incentive fee to the CTA unless they made money first! Peter also assists clients with navigating the many electronic online order execution platforms and systematic trading platforms.
Peter’s family is his core. He has been married to his wife Eileen since 1983 and owes much of his success to her. She helped him navigate the twists and turns he faced throughout his career and helped him achieve many of his career goals. He notes that she did all of this while continuing to work at an investment company herself and raising their one and only daughter, Haley. In Peter’s free time he enjoys gardening, hiking, and spending time with close friends. Don’t be surprised if you see him riding around on his V-8 motorcyle.
He is a strong believer that less is more. He learned the value of a dollar when he began working at eight years old. After assisting multiple clients over the years, his take away is simple. Peter notes, “Slow and steady wins the race. People that tend to swing for the fences aren’t around long. The people that shoot for singles are still doing well.”

I have enjoyed working with Peter since 2009. I think he is the most conscientious broker I have ever encountered in my more than 30 years of investing. He always responds to my queries very quickly and never leaves me confused or with more questions. It is nice to know that I can contact him and get an immediate response. We have enjoyed talking about more than investing on many occasions; including my Mario Andretti Racing Experience at Charlotte Motor Speedway where I drove an Indy 500 racecar at 160 MPH. Peter and I enjoyed talking about that experience!
